lumen prints, 20x24", 2022
Unlike traditional photographic portraits, lumen printing requires the subject to make direct contact with the surface to which the image is being transferred. In order for the image to be made, the subject must touch the surface. Trace is the first of several explorations of the existential relationship between the body and the photograph. Responding to the process of objectification inherent to all photographic media, the moment of photographing is removed from the camera and slowed down. Rather than an instantaneous take, light has traced my form, imprinting a deeply authentic yet censored outline of my body. Through soft and fluid gestures, the body is being both constructed and abstracted, piecing it together from what the material can detect and hiding finer details that can not be seen by lumen processing. Created in collaboration with light, I attempt to understand what it is to leave a photographic mark and exist before the camera.
